Once India got the independence from British Raj Our political leaders pushed India towards very confusing ideology. They mentioned secularism in constitution yet all the civil laws were formed with assumption that people of India are religious.
A nation that declares itself secular enacts Muslim Personal Law and Christian Personal Law boards is ideologically imprudent nation.
Indian version of secularism cannot work with a nation with multiple religions with contrasting ideologies. It is not possible to look after every religion when we have numerous very diverse culture.
What rights Indian atheist have?
India grants religious freedom that include right to not follow any religion. Atheists in India cannot legally become atheist. If you are a Hindu atheist then you are not eligible for minority welfare schemes despite being most prosecuted minority in India. If you are a ex-muslim atheist then too you will have to abide by sharia law enacted by Maulana heading Muslim Personal Law board. Just imagine that an ex-muslim has to follow Sharia law in a country that claims to be secular nation.
"India is still better than Pakistan for atheists." is a whataboutery.
This is not done to defend India, but but to stop victims to speak up. Just because atheists in India doesn't have central authority like Hinduism and Islam, crime against atheists are not shown in mainstream media.
Atheists are called "adharmi" which is a negative connotation. Insecure Dharmic people cannot trust adharmi as they may destroy their tradition.
