Cinthol Soap Review, Is this the best bath soap in India?

CINTHOL deo soap by Godrej is one of the well known bath soap series in India. Godrej is considered a reputed brand among middle class people. Godrej manufactures a lot of flavor variants under Cinthol branding that include Cinthol Original, Cinthol Lime, Cinthol Cool, Cinthol Health+ and Cinthol confidence. Unlike Dettol Original bath soap, Cinthol lime and Cinthol Cool are more trendy than Cinthol Original.

Let me first clear a misconception. Although Cinthol soaps are marked as bath soap (it is even mentioned on popular E-Commerce platform) it is actually a toilet soap. This fact is even mentioned on the wrapper of the soap. You might ask, what's the difference between a bath soap and a toilet soap? As their name suggest, Bath soap is used for bathing purpose hence have moisturizing effect on skin. They might also contain anti-fungal or anti-bacterial agents to prevent infection. Usually toilet soap lacks all of these. One another difference is that in bath soap the Total Fatty Matter (TFM) is less than 60% while Toilet soaps have 60 to 76% TFM. Higher TFM prevents dryness of the skin.

Toilet Soap Grades:

Grade 1 Soap : Cinthol soap lies in this category (which is a plus point). This contains 76 Total Fatty Matter (TFM).

Grade 2 and 3 : Between 60 to 70 % TFM

What's inside?

1. Sodium Palmate : Completely safe chemical. Perhaps it is the most important component of any soap. It help to remove oil, dirt and other sticky substances from your skin. It also helps in mixing deferent chemicals and oil by process called emulsification. It is important part of soap preparation.

2. Sodium Palm Kernelate : Is a type of surfactant that just like Sodium Palmate helps in removing oil, dirt and other stains from your skin. It gentle towards skin. It is completely safe for daily use.

3. Triclocarban : Germ killing agent that kills the harmful bacteria present on the skin. Godrej claims 99.9% Germ protection. They might have conducted the trials as I couldn't find any data to back-up that claim. Regarding safety, Europe's Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety (SCCS) has declared safe for consumer use. However the biomagnification (deposition into large quantity) of this compound in environment (specially aquatic ecosystem) may cause harm. So if you are environment conscious than you should be aware of its presence in this soap.

4. Titanium Dioxide : It is color enhancing agent. New Jersey Debarment of Health declares it as a carcinogenic in humans. It suggests that use of Titanium Dioxide should be avoided.

Safety issues:

1. It might be absorbed by skin and cause cancer.

2. Its exposure can irritate eyes, nose and throat. (If you are using this soap and have constant sore throat then try changing the soap).

3. It can also cause lung disease. It is proven by research studies.

5. Disodium EDTA : It is added as a preservative in this soap. Just like Titanium Dioxide it also has bad safety profile. It is also carcinogenic and cause breast cancer. Application of this on skin may cause itching and irritate the eyes.

My opinion:

I have been using this soap for few months. It effectively cleanse the skin. It instantly removes oil and other dirt from the skin and you feel refreshed. But considering the toxic chemicals present in this soap, it might not be the best choice for regular use. Manufacturers do not specify the concentration of these chemicals present in this soap as it does not fall under "drug" category despite having potential carcinogenic chemicals in it. It also contains strong fragrance and company does not declare what do they add under this label. So people with low immunity (such as children, adults and sick) should avoid this soap altogether. If you are healthy individual then you can use it occasionally for better "body cleansing" but avoid the daily use.
